Norfolk State University

Norfolk State University is an historically black public research university in Norfolk, Virginia. As the state’s only public historically black university, the university was founded on September 17, 1935 as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University. In 1969, it became independent and gained university status. NSU is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and offers 20 undergraduate and 5 master’s degree programs, over 70 academic minors, and certificates in various fields of technology, science, engineering and mathematics, as well as numerous areas of study in the humanities and social sciences. The university is known for producing nurses, physical therapists, engineers and other STEM professionals. By providing collaborative learning and networking opportunities to its students, Norfolk State has placed a major focus on creativity, innovation, and research.
