The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is a public military university located in Lexington, Virginia, United States. Established in 1839, VMI is the oldest state-supported military college in the United States and the only one to have its own cadet corps. The school is the birthplace of the ‘Rats Line’, a military honor guard formed in 1856 that traditionally welcomed visitors to the Institute. VMI is well known for its rigorous academic programs, military training, and strict Honor Code. VMI graduates have distinguished themselves in a variety of fields, including government, business, and the military. With its strong military heritage, VMI also consistently ranks among the best public universities in the nation for producing future military officers.
