Houston-Tillotson University is an historically black college in Austin, Texas. Established in 1875, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education for African Americans in the Southwest United States. Despite its name, HTU is not a merger of two institutions but rather is the product of a single founding. The school was founded by the Freedmen’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church to educate newly-emancipated citizens after the Civil War. Today, the university’s mission is to provide a liberal arts-based education that equips its students to become independent thinkers and ethical leaders of their local and global communities. HPH offers a variety of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as a robust student services division that supports students throughout their collegiate careers. With its commitment to equality and access to college-level courses, HPH works hard to maintain its proud history while also pushing forward the possibilities of the future.
