Berea College is a private college in Kentucky that was founded in 1855 to provide educational opportunities for African Americans and people of the Appalachian region. It is one of the eight federally-recognized Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Berea is the only one of these institutions that provides free tuition, and availability is limited to low-income students from Appalachia. The college has a long history of providing a quality education that is accessible and affordable for students from many backgrounds, promoting a strong focus on social justice, equality, and service. Its commitment to these ideals has led to an impressive record of civic engagement among its students, faculty, and staff.
